Read the information below and respond in a comment to ONE of the questions. Be sure to restate the question.

Chapter 5 Pi was unhappy as a child with his name (Piscine), as it was often mispronounced as “pissing” when it is meant to be pronounced as “pea-seen” . For that reason as he grows up and enters the next level of school, he makes a show of jumping up during roll call and announcing to the class that his name is “Pi” even illustrating it with the mathematical symbol on the chalkboard.

1. Why is it, as Pi suggests, “a law of human nature that those who live by the sea are suspicious of swimmers”? (p 22)

2. Pi explains “in that elusive, irrational number with which scientists try to understand the universe, I found refuge.” (p 24) How does this explain Pi’s character and nature?

    1. Not necessarily, it could just mean that 3.14 is named Pi, and he wants to be called Pi

  3. Pi says that it is a law of human nature because people are suspicious of newcomers. This is because they don't know them.

    1. I very much agree that when people have had bad consequences, they are quick to judge others as bullies or unkind people.

  4. 2. This statement tells us that Pi probably likes to be learning and working on something. He probably also likes to immerse himself in work to ignore things he's struggling with.

    1. I can relate to this statement "he likes to Immerse himself in work to ignore things he is struggling with", by saying that I do that allot of the time because I don't want someone to tell me I am struggling.

  5. Pi shows his character and nature by saying that because it shows that he is smart and knows how to deal with his own problems in life, he fights his own battles. Pi is saying that a number he doesn't really care for, a mystical, not logical number used to explain the universe, has helped him through some of his problems.

    1. I agree, Pi wants to solve his own problems, while using his own skills, which happens to be smarts.

  6. Pi suggests this because this statement means that if you live by the sea you know what happens normally and if a swimmer shows up you get suspicious. When you live by the sea you sort of become their friend and if you see someone coming you are suspicious that they will do something out of the ordinary like littering and harming something you have been around your life.

    1. I agree with you because when people lived by the sea their whole life they do get suspicious because they don't know the person and if he or she is a good person or not.

  7. This means that Pi was quick to judge those who would scoff his name as "pissing." When he states that his name is mathematically irrational and took refuge in it, he means that even though his name can be mispronounced and scolded, he is able to take shelter knowing that "Pi" is very complex and interesting.

    1. I agree, but I feel he wanted a new name also because he wanted to set a new reputation kinda. His name is Pi, not Pissing.

    2. He wants people to know that he won't let them call him names and they will call him something that has to do with learning or complexities. -Maya

  8. Why is it, as Pi suggests "a law of human nature that those who live by the sea are suspicious of swimmers"? I believe that if you choose to live by the sea than you might swim allot or go out and do allot of water related activities there fore being able to swim suspiciously.

  9. This explains that Pi wants to understand how everything works. He is curious and wants to learn things and be able to understand them all.

    1. I think that is a good answer and I agree about Pi being curious. I also thought that he might use learning to hide from his problems, though.

    2. I agree about Pi being curious (and also brave) but I don't think Pi should hide from his problems or learn to hide from them. It is bad to his=de from your problems because then you won't learn from them and you won't overcome your fears. -Riley

    3. I agree. Pi does seem curious and is trying to learn to fix problems.

  10. 1. All that live in the sea are suspicious of humans that swim in their home.

    2. He felt safe from the people at his school that would tell him that his name was Pissing.

  11. 2. This statement says that he found comfort in knowing that he wont be nicknamed "pissing Patel". He says he finds refuge in the number 3.14 and that's because 3.14 is nicknamed Pi, a name Piscine hopes to achieve.

  12. 2 - This explains that Pi might want to explore nature, and how he is as a person. This means that he might want to just explore and have fun while learning about how different animals act in nature. :)

  13. 1. I think that this isn't just referencing humans but also marine life as a whole.
It is probably very hard to guess what a creature will do next.

  14. 2. This shows Pi's character and nature because when scientist found that number they try to connect it to the universe while Pi doesn't understand what it's for so he uses that for his name so people might understand his name better.

    1. I agree with you, Pi is very intelligent and tries to show it but is always bullied due to his name. I honestly think that he has a mathematical because it is 1- it is short for his name and 2- he has a name that is very smart. 3.14!

  17. pi happens to state the law of human nature is because it means that when your used to something you wouldn't want to do anything new.the reason that statement explains Pi's character is because it show he likes to stick to logic because it comforts him.

  18. When Pi says "in that elusive, irrational number with which scientists try to understand the universe, I found refuge,” I'm lead to think that Pi finds comfort in his smarts and within numbers. He makes the statement and it comforts him how he can save himself from harsh names be simply using his smarts and saying how he can find refuge while the scientists try to under the universe, just like he finds himself doing.

  19. 2. This shows that he is curios person. It also proves that he doesn't understand everything in the Universe.

  20. the statement tells us pi's nature and character by letting us know that Pi did not like not being able to understand the world around him. The statement let us know that pi likes being able to make sense of the world around him and is discomforted by the unknown

Life of Pi 3

Read the information below and respond in a comment to ONE of the questions. Be sure to restate the question. Chapter 16 Pi’s first visit to a Hindu temple as a child is full of wonderment and worship rituals. He describes the details of the rituals and what they stand for in the religion. He is a very religious man and enjoys it, but explains that fundamentalism is flawed with a story about Krishna disappearing before possessive milkmaids. He mentions both Christians 13 for their trust in love and Muslims for their awareness of God in everything. He makes a very circuitous description of how different the religions are and yet how with a different hat they are completely interchangeable.  1. Pi suggests that “many people seem to lose God along life’s way.” Why is this the case? Is this true of our community/ society?  2. Describe the significant rituals of each of the religious traditions that Pi embraces.  3. Pi says “the universe makes sense...
