Life of Pi 4

Read the information below and respond to the question. Be sure to restate the question.

Chapter 35

The date of Pi’s family’s departure is given as June 21, 1977 (summer solstice) on the Japanese freighter, Tsimtsum along with the animals in their cages. He is incredibly excited to be leaving. This Chapter delivers the final beautiful descriptions of India and Pi’s mother country for the book.

Pi reflects “Things didn’t turn out the way they were supposed to, but what can you do? You must take like the way it comes at you and make the best of it.” What might explain Pi’s acceptance of the chances of life?

  5. Pi accepts this because I think this book is supposed to have been written after all of the events happened, and Pi has already been stranded. He knows that there was nothing he really could've done to prevent that unless he drowned, so he's learned to just flow with life.

  6. Pi might except life because he understands that life is as it is and he doesn't exactly have a say in it. He might get it from watching animals at the zoo adapt to there surroundings and let humans basically control there lives. -Maya

  7. You really can't do anything about changes in life. You keep on doing what you are supposed to do. It does not matter if it was a good change or a bad change.

Religion may explain Pi's acceptance of change. You must have faith and trust, no matter what happens.

  8. What might explain Pi’s acceptance of the chances of life? I would hypothesize that i would have an emotional expectancy for the departure, but it was rather quick.

  9. Pi's acceptance would be that whatever life has thrown at pie he will take and move on. As Pi states "you can take it and make the best of it", this means that you always have a chance to turn things around and make them positive.

  11. Pi feels this way because he knows you can't stop the bad parts of life but you can turn them into better situations. Pi also knows that things can't just go on being dismal so you shouldn't dwell on the bad times, but dream of the good. -Riley

    1. I agree that Pi does have a hard time making decisions by himself because they rarely come around, having a big brother in all, but your right, he does make the most out of it.

  12. Pi accepts the changes in life because he knows that he can't stop what's happening. If something doesn't go his way Pi will just try to make the best of it and not be mad because it didn't go his way.

  13. Pi is thinking about how he kind of has to except what is happening to him since her knows that it will be hard not to, He also knows that he has to stay with the animals because that is all that he has left with him.
He was very willing to except what was happening to him, he was probably thinking how he is going to have faith and trust that someone would find him and the animals. :)

  15. I believe that Pi accepts life's bumps and turns because he knows he can't very well go back in time. He has different religions and people shame him for it, does he just give them up? No, Because he loves his religions and that's worth fighting for. So when like throws him around he stays strong

  17. I think that, because Pi knows that you have to take life as it comes and and push through the hard days to get to the good ones.

  18. The thing that makes Pi realize his chance of survival is when the Hinayana starts eating the zebra and also kills orange juice he realizes hes not only in the middle of the ocean hes on board a boat with wild animals.

  19. I think he takes it easily because his life was always strange. He knows that things happen and that you need to accept it because you cant change what already happened.

  20. Pi's acceptance of life comes from the understanding that you can't change what already happened in life. He understands that it is important to be able to take the chalenges life gives you and defeat them.

Life of Pi 2

Read the information below and respond in a comment to ONE of the questions. Be sure to restate the question. Chapter 5 Pi was unhappy as a child with his name (Piscine), as it was often mispronounced as “pissing” when it is meant to be pronounced as “pea-seen” . For that reason as he grows up and enters the next level of school, he makes a show of jumping up during roll call and announcing to the class that his name is “Pi” even illustrating it with the mathematical symbol on the chalkboard. 1. Why is it, as Pi suggests, “a law of human nature that those who live by the sea are suspicious of swimmers”? (p 22) 2. Pi explains “in that elusive, irrational number with which scientists try to understand the universe, I found refuge.” (p 24) How does this explain Pi’s character and nature?

Read the information below and respond in a comment to ONE of the questions. Be sure to restate the question. Chapter 16 Pi’s first visit to a Hindu temple as a child is full of wonderment and worship rituals. He describes the details of the rituals and what they stand for in the religion. He is a very religious man and enjoys it, but explains that fundamentalism is flawed with a story about Krishna disappearing before possessive milkmaids. He mentions both Christians 13 for their trust in love and Muslims for their awareness of God in everything. He makes a very circuitous description of how different the religions are and yet how with a different hat they are completely interchangeable.  1. Pi suggests that “many people seem to lose God along life’s way.” Why is this the case? Is this true of our community/ society?  2. Describe the significant rituals of each of the religious traditions that Pi embraces.  3. Pi says “the universe makes sense...
